I contacted Gabe of www.dsmskateboarding.com after seeing him in DM Juice. I asked him if I could take some skate photos of his group sometime. We met up at Skate South where they currently gather once a week or so. A big thanks to Gabe, Skate South, and all the skaters that risked their lives to help get me better shots. These guys have some incredible talent, it was amazing seeing them in action.
This being my first time shooting any indoor low light sports, I didn’t do horrible but I didn’t do as well as I wanted to either. The poor and sparse lighting (rollerskating rinks usually only use their mood and disco lighting) didn’t help me capture action very well. I had to use compact strobe flashes to illuminate and freeze the action. I should have used more variety in lighting setups for better results. It was definitely more challenging than any shooting I’ve done before, a learning experience no doubt.

Sounds good. If you’re willing to help, it would actually be great to have a voice activated light stand. “Move right, move left, zoom in flash head, zoom out flash,” etc. I just received my real radio slave triggers, so everything should work a little better now.

For the crappy lighting Skate South has the pics look better this way. it looks good witt everything dark in the background. makes you focus on the skater. gives it character. as an amature photographer and skater my self.
