Surprisingly the Des Moines skyline is too large for a city of our size. Most other cities of the same metro population or much larger don’t compare at all with ours. But of course I wouldn’t discourage companies from adding to it. There’s many angles where there are huge empty spaces between buildings. It would look better if it was more dense.
Congrats on your 801 Grand lightning photo at the state fair competition. Hopefully I’ll be up there with you next year.

Des Moines is beautiful. I didn’t know before looking in this site that the Equitable Building when it was built was the tallest west of the Mississippi River. Omaha, eat your heart out. The tallest building in Omaha looks like a concrete grain silo with windows. 801 Grand is a lovely icon for the city. I live in Phoenix (4.3 million people); Des Moines has a more impressive downtown skyline than we do. I grew up in northwest Iowa and would love to move back to Des Moines, where people are better educated and much more civilized than they are here. Phoenix is a cowtown, but do I dare try Des Moines? Is it true, like they say, that it’s the biggest little town in Iowa? Is Des Moines a city yet?

Fred: Wow you’re right, Phoenix is a real low-rise place but vastly spread out.
Personally I think Des Moines is a great place to live. It may not be a tourism mecca outside of Iowa, but the city has a lot going for it. As a side note a recent study has shown a sharp increase in tourism, especially from Illinois. Des Moines really has a taste of about everything most people desire. Just don’t expect to overload your plate.
I’m not sure what aspects make a city a cowtown, but Des Moines is very much urban and up with the times.
Anyone should be able to find their place and enjoy life in the Des Moines area. We have a diverse variety of people, cultures, communities, and things to do. We may not be the first stop for band tours or most likely to influence national fashion trends, but less than 5 cities are.
FYI: These are my honest opinions, unfortunately this low budget production is not worthy of city sponsorship… no I really haven’t tried.
